In anticipation of Mother's Day, eugenie visited the studio of local Detroit artist, Jessie Hicks, to discuss making and motherhood. Living and creating in a city known for its resilience and reinvention, Jessie's work is inseparable from place, grounded in the tactile, the relational, and the cyclical. Across all her forms—ceramics, painting, baking, mothering—she moves with an embodied awareness of time, transformation, and the personal imprint of the hand.
Read our exclusive interview with Jessie on our website, where she explores the delicate balance between intention and reception in cultivating a creative life. From kneading dough to shaping clay, Jessie reflects on the art of motherhood and the importance of following the rhythms that feel most natural to her.
"Painting was my first love, actually. Before food or ceramics, there was painting. I had an incredible art mentor when I was a kid, and she really shaped the way I see the world. I had confidence as a painter, which got me through my awkward adolescence. I think about this with my own kids—how important it is to have confidence in doing something. It can really be the difference between standing in your own power or falling to peer pressure."
