a sensory celebration of spring, story, and soil | | From the beginning of time, humans have used storytelling as a way to make sense of the world. This Earth Day, we're honored to partner with celebrated Detroit poet and educator Jacqueline Suskin to explore storytelling as a tool for connection, care, and ecological reverence—values that shape everything we do at eugenie. | | Beginning as a visual and oral tradition, our ancient ancestors gathered around fire, cave, and community to piece together humanity's place in the wider cosmos. Myths of supernatural beings on epic journeys, animals performing extraordinary feats, and lovers embracing across space and time have permeated everyday consciousness for countless centuries. From antiquity to modernity, we have formed our stories just as powerfully as those stories have formed us. At eugenie, we see fashion as storytelling—an exchange between material, maker, and wearer. What we wear carries meaning, deeply rooted in memory and place. Today, we're reflecting on the stories we need now in a world facing environmental and social change. We're inspired by the idea that stories are not just entertainment, but vessels—ways of holding what matters most. | | | "Words hold things. They bear meanings. A story is a bag to carry things in." Ursula K. Le Guin | | | Prolific author celebrated for her innovative explorations of gender, power, and world-making, recipient of over 20 literary awards and founder of the Ursula K. Le Guin Foundation. | | Our choice of language—and the forms in which we sculpt it—brings to life the shape of our world. Each of us carries a story that holds endless capacities for change, peace, and power. Day by day, we bring our "carrier bag" (Le Guin), chalked full of possibility, into the lives of our neighbors, families, and the natural world—an encounter bursting with hope and potential. As we hoist the culmination of our unique yet interconnected stories onto our shoulders, we reach down to discover that… | | "Language is the dwelling place of ideas that do not exist anywhere else." Robin Wall Kimmerer
| | | | Renowned Native American author and scientist, recipient of numerous literary and scientific awards, including the 2023 National Humanities Medal. | | To craft a new future, one full of possibilities we've only begun to imagine, we must turn to the powerful, imaginative act of story-shaping, story-telling, and story-sharing. We can weave a new story of humanity—one that mends environmental disconnection and strengthens our identities as people living in a vast, beautiful, and supportive ecosystem. What stories linger in your carrier bag, and what worlds are waiting to be transformed by your touch?
This weekend, we will be exploring these powerful questions in-store alongside celebrated local poet Jacqueline Suskin. With work featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and beyond, Suskin has crafted a legacy of written reverence for the natural world, composing raw and relatable inquiries into the nature of being here on Earth. | | | "I am just an assortment of atoms moving through space & time. A great mystery compiled in this rare form." Jacqueline Suskin
| | | Like Suskin, we are committed to continuously reimagining our responsibilities to both the planet and each other—commitments that are deeply intertwined. Our words, like our worlds, are anchored in the mutual task of interconnection - that is, we become-with one another, co-creating the future through the seeds we sow today. By tending our shared ground, we can bring our visions of an earth-forward, equity-focused future to fruition - trellising our hopes and missions into a communal story of planetary well-being. | | Saturday, April 26, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm 1400 Van Dyke St, Detroit, MI | | Join us in-store this week to gather and grow a new story with a few of our local friends.
